Among the more than 20 brands are SRAM, Promax, KMC, Avid, Gyes, Velo, Truvativ, Continental, and Kenda. The Datum comes with 32c tyres, which is a bit closer to the ‘road’ end of the spectrum. But there is clearance for up to 38c, so if the conditions require it, this bike is able to handle the rougher stuff. Not quite mainstream, yet still hugely popular, Genesis Bikes are a British brand loved by steel-aficionados and adventurers alike.

Due to being disc brake only, the bridge between the seatstays could be removed. This further increases mud clearance and also adds to the frame’s compliance, providing better control. Definitely not a versatile bike; this is designed with only CX racing in mind and makes no compromises – except for, perhaps, its two sets of bottle bosses. The 16 years old brand is mainly known for the conception of durable bicycles made of quality materials. Most of these bikes are reported by users as comfortable and reliable, some of which are record-breakers (bicycle touring in particular).

Its 1×9 drivetrain keeps things simple, while the swept back riser bars give the rider a more upright position. If you’re a roadie, Genesis has a few models for you to consider.

The geometry is a little more upright, making for a more comfortable and less twitchy ride. There are mounts for mudguards and a pannier rack, which expands the range of use from just road riding to commuting and even lightweight cycle touring. The Croix de Fer is probably Genesis’ flagship bike, much loved by adventurers and commuters alike. It’s the ultimate all-round all-terrain machine, with a hardy steel frameset, disc brakes, relaxed geometry and mounts for all the additional fittings you might need. The Croix de Fer comes in three steel options (10, 20 and 30) as well as a titanium model. At the entry-level, the Delta is an aluminium frame and carbon fork road bike with endurance geometry that comes with rim brakes and provides a comfortable ride.

They have been advocates of steel as a material choice due to its superior ride characteristics and durability. This company meticulously designs its bikes, incorporating advanced technology and durable materials, ensuring optimal performance and comfort. Essentially an aluminium version of the Croix de Fer, the CDA features a similar plethora of mounts and wide clearances but comes in at a significantly lower price.

So when using the ride, emergency braking can be used to break the front and rear wheels simultaneously. Some people think there is more suspension, and there is some redundancy, but when riding with more suspension can be better damping. Former professional road and track rider Adam Blythe has a new Genesis road bike and it’s certainly provoking comment, not just because of the gold leaf finish but also thanks to the bulbous head tube. This company has perfected the art of crafting steel frames, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern technologies to create comfortable and responsive bikes. Over the years, Genesis expanded its product line to include mountain, gravel, adventure, and urban commuting bikes, catering to a broader range of cycling disciplines.

Twist shifters tend to be a quick and easy way to tell the quality of a bike. While aesthetically, the quality of the bike was fantastic, I did run into quality issues. The front shock squeaked when I went over bumps, and the front derailleur wouldn’t shift through all of the gears.

Not too long and well balanced with none of the ‘too much weight on the wrists’ feeling that sometimes comes on trail hardtails. Kit wise the Genesis is sensibly specced, Shimano Deore takes care of transmission duties with a SLX rear derailleur, brakes are Deore too. Genesis are a British brand that have been building decent bikes and a decent reputation so I was looking forward to a chance to see if the positive buzz about the company and their bikes was well earned. Specialized also launched a Peter Sagan collection with a largely gold frameset a few years ago.

However, even that bike offers great components and specifications everywhere else. Its upgraded version, the Genesis Equilibrium Disc, offers excellent specifications across the board, with the steel frame left as the only questionable component choice. However, with the slightly increased weight of these two models comes more durability, which may be what you’ve been after all along. Unlike many other brands of road bikes, the steel frames aren’t found on the cheapest models. Instead, the more affordable models, such as the ones sold at Walmart, are often made of Aluminum.

But for races that are solely on roads, this should be more than adequate. The fork travel is 80mm, also made of aluminum, solid and reliable. In the actual use of mountain bikes, the stability of the fork determines the life of the bike. The Day One — its inaugural bike from 2001 — is still going strong as a low maintenance singlespeed with disc brakes and mounts for mudguards. The Vapour is Genesis’ CX race machine and there are three models available (10, 20 and 30).
