Old School BMX Tagged “Brand: Mongoose”

Gear-obsessed editors choose every product we review. Mongoose now has a number of decades to the history of the brand, with BMX now moving towards the 21st century and entering a new era, literally and figuratively. It is perhaps at this point that the story skips forward, with there being way too many moments and characters to emphasise. It is perhaps overdue at this point to mention that the name Mongoose was the result of Skip, and interestingly, was taken from 5 x national drag racing champion Tom ‘The Mongoose’ McEwen. Pretty awesome to think that the very early roots of BMX have drag racing ties, as well as a more obvious association with motocross and skating (which was also taking off at the time, and also in southern California).

For all the dirt-jumping folks looking to recapture their BMX days, BMX racers, park dwellers, Bike Lifers and freestyle urban riders—this list is for you. Nonetheless, the popularity of the ‘Mini Scoot’ meant that the company was able to strengthen and consolidate its vision, the Mongoose brand continues. Another character falling under the ‘iconic’ umbrella is the infamous Harold ‘Magoo’ McGruther. With a BMX resume like no other (stemming from the early 1970s in which BMX was emerging), ‘Magoo’ arrives at Mongoose headquarters after having diversified and finessed product development knowledge at GT in the years prior. For the Mongoose brand and its long history, the role of BMX bandits further improved the iconic status with the chrome ‘Supergoose’ model (with blue wheels and accessories) being ridden by one of the central characters ‘Goose’. Young ‘Goose’ is joined by another BMX bike enthusiast ‘P.J.’ who one day have a run in with a young trolley collector by the name of ‘Judy’ and embark on a journey to help her tally funds to buy a BMX bike.

From the first products – to our current crop of BMX, Mountain and pavement bikes, Mongoose is synonymous with bikes that perform on the smoothest single track to the biggest drops and riders looking for trails that mongoose bmx never end and keep the party going. Very few complete bikes are available in this size, and some manufacturers appear to be ignoring the segment in hopes it will fade away. Wethepeople has put its back into promoting 22-inch BMX with the well-equipped, right-sized Audio, which should fit riders between 5-foot-8-inches and 6-foot-2-inches. With their more stability and predictability, 22-inch bikes are an excellent choice for riders who haven’t been on a bike in a while but who don’t want to make a move to 26- or 29-inch cruisers.

Not that I had many bikes to compare my ’96 to,(only my old huffy pro thunder), but it is so light and quick and really responds quickly to every turn when I ride it. I guess no one knows when they started making them in mongoose excursion Taiwan and if mid school bikes are made stronger than old school bikes. I just gathered that they were from the hundreds of posts I have read here.

A few posts up there is a link to the new Mongoose bikes that are supposed to be as good as anyone else’s and are not walgoose editions. I did some digging on another site and found that by 1983 Mongoose frames were being built in Taiwan. I feel that bad now with mine being made there too. Raceit, I wanted but did not have a Mongoose in my teenage years. I guess that is why I still WANT that 1980 Supergoose I never had. I am a bit closer by now having my ’96 Mongoose expert pro.
