Uphill, however, we definitely expended a significantly higher amount of energy with our toothpick-like legs. On flat roads, shifting gears will allow you to put more or less effort into your ride as you please, allowing for a lot of levity in the experience. We didn’t clock our speeds, but the bike can supposedly top about 15 miles per hour on flat ground with the pedal-assist on, and that sounds about right to us. Even though this electric bike offers 24 speeds (and thus has grip shifters on the left and right handle bars) the cockpit is relatively clean.
Then again — the bike is still a functioning piece of equipment once the battery is dead, so maybe we should all stop being so lazy. A tough, well-balanced, affordably priced, single-speed electric bike from a well established brand, available in three frame sizes for improved fit, sporty forward-leaning geometry. No suspension elements but the fork is steel which provides some vibration dampening properties and…… I mostly used the motor in pedal-assist mode, though I will cover the throttle in the next section.
For seniors, we recommend an e-bike with a step-thru frame and upright riding position. This frame style makes it easier to get on and off the bike, and an upright riding position is easier on the lower back. I had to adjust my derailleur a bit on the first ride out so all the gears hit just right but once it was adjusted it was smooth. This creates a more seamless look and functionality with both the front and rear lights. These bikes are best on pavement, and offer a super comfortable ride and totally upright position, making them ideal for older riders or those with limited mobility. These frames also feature a step-through design which makes it super easy to get onto or off of the saddle. Schwinn claims the bike will get 60 miles pedal-assisted for your average terrain and rider. I estimated that my cautious, pedal + motor speed was around 25mph. The Skate Escape folks said that larger riders with gear and consistent hills should only expect a range miles if they rely heavily on the motor. This sounds about right considering that this is meant to be a power schwinn beach cruiser assist, not a motorized vehicle. And the price, $1500 for the Campus, might seem pricey for those of us outside the cycling culture, but I assure you its actually quite competitive for integrated electric bikes of this category. Yes, Schwinn makes a variety of high-quality hybrid and cruiser e-bikes that are perfect for commuting, errands, or cruises through town.
By the way, it is my understanding that Schwinn has not made bikes for many years but just licenses their name. About ten years ago we sold Currie electric scooters under the Schwinn name. The included kickstand is also nice because it mounts near the back wheel so it doesn’t get in the way when you need to back the bike up while the kickstand is down. It has about an inch of travel between off and full, and you can push the throttle part way down or all the way down. Overall, I think Schwinn needs to better balance its approach when it comes to the motor and how hard it pushes, especially when it has a full charge. So, if you commute, or you frequently run errands, an e-bike can save you a lot of gas, and get you outside more. So now that we’ve waxed philosophic about e-bikes, let’s get to the Coston CE.
A removable battery allows extra batteries to be used, extending the range of the bike. Schwinn are now in their second generation schwinn dealers of ebikes with the Marshall, Coston CE and DX. Most ebikes just have a big battery hanging off the bottom tube.
