Coleman Back Home 10 5′ x 9′ Screen Canopy Tent

Some brands have pricing policies that restrict the prices that Ace may sell or advertise their products. The following is a list of brands and categories that are generally excluded from promotions, discounts or coupons. This list below may not be exhaustive and may change from time to time. It comes with a wheeled carry bag for relatively easy transport. My intention with these posts is to share some of the equipment that I find, or thought I would find, to make my hiking or camping experience better. Not all of the items are “must haves,” but I plan to share tips or things I wish I had known before purchasing. Now that you know what to look for, here are the best camping canopies currently on the market. The Woodlands Screen House uses six lightweight aluminum poles, just like the Screen House Shelter. Like the REI model, the L.L.Bean tent uses polyester (ripstop, in this case), which is more resistant to UV damage and absorbs less moisture than nylon by weight.

Weather is uncertain and you never know how annoying bugs will be. It’s better to be prepared than to let something unexpected ruin your weekend. If you’re solo camping, you don’t need a canopy to fit eight people; it’ll just add extra unnecessary weight. If you’re camping with your family then you want to make sure the canopy is large enough to fit everyone. Camping is a blast, and a great way to get in touch with nature.

The roof is with their UVGuard material and they claim it offers 50+ UPF protection. This is a waterproof Polyguard 2X double-thick fabric material so you have some rain protection here. You have telescoping poles and they are easy to extend and to lock into place thanks to what they call pinch-free Comfort Grip coleman canopy technology. Note that the poles are with large feet so that the structure can stand on while you set it up. There are three main elements here, the frame, the roof, and the screen around. So the fabric elements are separately removable and you can use this structure as a gazebo with the frame and roof only.

This screen house has two doors that can be kept open with built-in loops or closed with zippers. It can be set up quickly, and the ground stakes and pre-attached guy lines keep it stable even when the wind picks up. The screenhouse comes in two sizes; 10’ x 10’ and 15’ x 13,’ and it packs down nicely into the included carrying bag.

But the L.L.Bean tent’s peak ceiling height of 6 feet 6 inches is half a foot lower than that of the REI tent, making it feel notably darker and less spacious. It typically costs more (in fact, the price has risen substantially—more than $150—since we first tested it) and lacks the convenient coleman canopy strap-equipped carrying bag we like. In early March, we took our second trip to the oceanside Sycamore Canyon Campground (PDF) near Oxnard, California. A later check of the weather at nearby Point Mugu Naval Air Station confirmed top recorded wind gusts of 40 miles per hour.

Regarding weather conditions and climate, obviously this is a structure for nice weather, but it is strong and stable, and as mentioned above, it offers rain protection too, but there are no walls.

As one of the best pop up canopy tents on the market, the Clam Quick Set Escape  measures 12’ x 12’ and has enough room for up to eight people. The tent provides 94 square feet of space, has a 7.5’ center height clearance, and can fit a standard size picnic table. The 210D poly-oxford tent offers 50+ UV guard protection, a mesh screen, and a water-resistant roof. It includes six tent stakes, tie down ropes, and a carrying bag.

We also timed setup and breakdown times for each shelter, and we repeatedly zipped and unzipped doors and windows, looking for annoying snags. Since 2015, I’ve tested camping shelters and large car-camping tents on weekend trips involving more than a dozen families, and I have talked to dozens more about their tent travails. Over the years, I have evaluated gear for magazines including Wired, Popular Science, and National Geographic Adventure, where I was a senior editor.
