A sociology professor at UC-Davis, “Finley” as he was known to friends, had built a prototype mountain bike as early as 1953 with multiple gears and knobby tires that he named “Woodsy”. It is widely considered to be the world’s first mountain bike. Ritchey started building frames as a teenager in the early 1970s in the basement of his parents’ Menlo Park, CA home. The biggest monster of them all though has to be the Fugio. With its steel frame and carbon fork, asymmetrical chainstays and 650b wheels with gargantuan 50c tyres, it’s perfect if you want a bike that will take you anywhere, but don’t want a mountain bike. Ritchey pushed hard for the use of 650b wheels early on in the development of the mountain bike, but the market preferred the 26” wheel. Luckily for Ritchey, the learning curve for the whole genesis bike market segment was quick, and by the time he got his mountain bike race team going, 26” wheels offered lightweight options. Former professional road and track rider Adam Blythe has a new Genesis road bike and it’s certainly provoking comment, not just because of the gold leaf finish but also thanks to the bulbous head tube. People don’t realize that mountain bike sport was ramping up in the early eighties, and I was tied into racing.
If you’re a petite woman, the Liv Tempt 4 would be an affordable option. If you prefer a wider range of speed options the Genesis 26″ V2100 Mountain Bike might be an entry-level bike worth trying. Smoothly adjusting the gears during the ride can have a genesis mountain bike good riding experience, especially on mountain roads with up and down hills. The wheelset is lightweight with an internal rim width of 19mm that will take good sized rubber which means you could add some float to the ride with some high volume tyres.
If you’re an advanced rider, you’ll probably find the V2100 a little boring, so we’d advise you to keep looking. On the whole, though, we’re glad that the company went to so much effort in making a bike that performs well at such an affordable price. It makes an excellent commuter bike because it can handle some punishment. The tires grip the asphalt well, and you can get up to a nice speed—so if you oversleep, you’ll have a good chance of still getting to work on time. If your tastes tend more toward a leisurely ride in the country, this bike is going to suit you well. We’d also want to swap those out for something better pretty quickly.
